n 1971 an American couple, just out of college and just married, accepted an assignment with the Peace Corps to teach English in Afghanistan. From the time of their arrival in the country they found their idealism challenged by the harsh realities of culture, climate, and living conditions. The young men who were their students in English language classes were often unmotivated. Elana’s Afghan male supervisor was unhelpful and frequently disrespectful. Both Elana and Michael suffered severe bouts of dysentery, despite the care they took with the purchase and preparation of food. But they stayed on while others fled back to safety and Western comforts.Readers will applaud and thank them for staying despite these, and many other, very real difficulties. The book gives a picture of aspects of Afghan culture observed first-hand, over many months and many close encounters. It also offers wonderful descriptions of magnificent natural landscapes found along the routes of (often perilous) journeys away from the capital city on holiday outings.There is much to learn from A Few Minor Adjustments. The 450-plus pages of the book contain chapters of varying length, some as short as a page and a half. This invites the reader to read and digest by bits and pieces content unfamiliar to most of us. This book is valuable to our understanding of Afghanistan today. Aspects of the country’s ancient culture remain as these dedicated Peace Corps Volunteers experienced it 50 years ago.
